Get rid of the “fit bit” and actually do something. A wake up call post

Fitbit mentality is making you a sloth

People as a whole are getting lazier. Do a quick search to find some data and there is study after study showing that more and more people are living a sedentary lifestyle. As soon as they are home from work it’s to the couch for 4 hours. Getting less then 30 minutes of activity a day is more the norm then ever. REAL activity is even scarcer.  Taking the stairs once on the way up to your office at 9 am isn’t activity.

It’s little wonder health care and diseases are at an all time high while obesity continues to rise.

The worst part is we keep coming up with devices to help us be lazier. Don’t believe me? Then what the hell is this thing….

hover board

The latest trend setter in the lazy Olympics. The person is even wearing running shoes on this thing what the heck?! People can’t even walk for themselves any more its gotten so bad.

To make matters worse we have things like the fit bit. We have a device that tracks your steps or tells you how “active” you have been for the day. Not only do we barely walk around any more, we are tracking how much we aren’t. People, we are tracking the wrong metrics.

Since the guy above is such a trend setter, he’s probably wearing a fit bit to make it more ironic.

With these devices like the fit bit or smart phone aps, people are thinking they are meeting an activity level they need to be healthy. They trick you into feeling like you accomplished something. You know why? Because they actually make you believe taking 10,000 steps a day during their normal every day routine that I call “living” is activity. They actually aim for this. Finishing 10,000 steps is an accomplishment now. Its mind boggling. People posting on social media how they hit this bench mark for the day! Yay me, I managed to walk, with the 2 legs I was born with today that function in this manner or something. We need to aim higher and get healthier. Are steps even activity? That’s what we are supposed to do to get around in our environment. With the least amount of effort possible. It’s the most basic thing a human can do.

If you need a device to motivate and remind you you’re a sloth, you are going to end up like this guy. Darn Disney movie pegged it perfectly. If you don’t want to end up like this guy ditch the fit bit mentality and stop doing the bare minimum.

To be “active” and make a difference in your body you need to aim a bit higher and have a little more self motivation. Don’t aim for the same as the rest of the crowd. Be the exception. If you want to take 20,000 steps a day do it by jogging for 30 minutes on top of taking the stairs. Do some yoga, go for a hike, go rock climbing, go swimming, do some home fitness DVDs, weight train etc.  Invest in your future with a real active lifestyle so you can be around in the future for a real hover board invention (that you won’t use because you will be so darn active) you don’t need some fancy thing on your wrist telling you to get moving or that you have completed your activity for the day. You know when you have and it’s not after not taking the elevator this once.

Join me and Do something active every day. Get up a bit early and do a light stretch and quick 20 minute workout; hit your home gym after work etc. If you aren’t exhausted with sore muscles and a feeling of accomplishment and euphoria when you are done for the day, you weren’t active enough. Screw 3 times a week for 30 minutes meeting 10,000 step quota. That’s for people who want to be average.

Some may think I am being to harsh, but the truth is I am pushing you to be better. But I don’t have time to be as active as you are saying Mr. Noshortcuts. That’s impossible with my busy schedule of watching TV, surfing face book and instagram, and getting up right before I need to go to work, I have all sorts of commitments.

Is living important to you? Then if it is you will find a solution not an excuse to make being active a priority. In this day and age it’s almost a necessity if you want to live a long and healthy life.
