The one thing that can be a bit over whelming (and expensive) is getting your home gym set up for your new home fitness lifestyle. It’s taken me a couple years to get everything I have wanted, but you can have a pretty effective home gym for decent money if you shop around (like craigslist) instead of buying new, and getting only what you actually need for your goals. Once you start adding equipment to your home gym you will find you want to use it!
For calisthenics you need a pull up bar. It’s a must. But beyond that you can pretty much function without anything else in calisthenics if you are on a budget. Pull up bars are easy. You can get door attachment ones, quickly throw together some PVC pipe and mount to a ceiling, grab a random tree you name it. This is the beauty of calisthenics. If you’re on a budget, don’t want a gym membership, you can make it work with very little gear at all.
For those who want to invest in a long term home gym here’s what I recommend you slowly add to your collection as I have over time to get the most out of my home fitness journey. These big few are a huge help for turning your training hardcore.
Bowflex select techs. These are great addition to any home gym that are a must have eventually. They are just so handy. Doesn’t matter what type of fitness you are into. I recommend you hit craigslist though because you can get them way cheaper used and usually in great shape because people by them and think they will use then and after do. Always by the 90 pounders because you will regret it if you buy only the 50s.
Bench with incline. Having a solid bench with incline is great addition, especially if you want to use those select techs as best as possible or get into barbell training. Again craigslist is best bet for high quality basically new stuff
Steel cage. The steel cage is kind of the ultimate for a home gym. It can get a bit pricey even on craigslist but it’s totally worth it to have solid pull up bars and a rack for barbell training. You will have to slowly add barbell weights to the collection as they are generally about 1$ plus a pound but just do it over time collecting as you go.
With these pieces you can turn your garage or den or whatever into the ultimate gym and not have to deal with any bs of going to a health club. For me it’s worth the investment. Gyms suck. Take a look at my other post on gear you can add as accessories to help you meet you goals for more ideas
