Conditioning For Hockey Using Beachbody

I have been playing hockey for almost ten years now. I enjoy it more than almost anything as my number one hobby. I put a lot of time into it. But when I started there was one thing that separated me from the average beer leaguer, and that was a relentless pursuit to get better at it.

I didn’t want to just play a sport and be “ok” I wanted to play to have fun, score goals, be fast strong and make an impact. Sure I wasn’t going to the NHL when I started at age 23, ( I’m now 32 ) but I still wanted to be good and be noticed. I’m not really sure why some people are ok with being average at things ( but I’ll save mentality for a different blog post ).

As well, I wanted to be fit enough that I wasn’t coming to the bench losing a lung like most of the mid 30s guys I was playing with. I still play with a few guys that are not in game shape and sometimes I wonder when they will drop dead of a heart attack on the ice! It’s not good. If you want to play sports as you get older, you have to keep yourself in healthy condition.

Conditioning for Hockey using Beachbody

To get better at anything, you have to have a general knowledge of deliberate practice. Which is the relentless pursuit to get better while training with a purpose. For me and hockey, that was getting better at shooting, skating, stick handling etc. But it was also getting fit. Hockey is a very high fast paced sport. I wanted to find a way to get fit, but also not spend a bunch of money on equipment , personal training and gym memberships. It lead me to Beachbody. Most notably P90x first as it’s what Beachbody is most known for.

Beachbody has really impressed me in bringing something to the table that is professional training you can do at home which really pushes your limits. Very few people train like these programs get you to do. Which is why I believe people don’t progress going to the gym and doing a few weights, hitting the treadmill and coming home. They just don’t push themselves.

For hockey, I chose Insanity, the Asylum. It’s probably my favorite program for getting me to where I am today. When I first started I did one round of both volume 1 and 2, and by the end, I was all ready above my fellow beer league competition. With fitness you always want to be progressive, changing things and making it harder for yourself. Asylum brings that.

The program is a few years old now, but still rocks with some of the best training you will ever do. I still throw in rounds in my training every 3-6 months to keep me on my game. You just cannot beat the cross training and endurance is brings.

If you are getting into sports at any age, get into the insanity asylum. It will bring you to where you want to be and as an “elite” beer leaguer where your friends are wondering what you do when you’re off the ice!

Check out a few of my highlights, all possible by being in great shape with Beachbody programs.
